The Bravery of Two Emptage Brothers

Kentish Mercury 30th July 1859.
Acts of Bravery

We have to record again another act of bravery, which shows the willingness of our boatmen at any time to risk their lives where those of their fellow creatures are in danger.

A few days ago one of them, named George Henry Emptage, jumped off the jetty head Margate, and saved the life of a child which had fallen over.

On being asked what compensation he required, he merely asked that his watch might be put in order, which had been damaged by the water.

Another of the Emptage’s, (Edward Lindsay – brother), also saved a child on Thursday evening last, who had also fallen off the jetty, which is certainly not a safe place for children to play.

Note:

George Henry Emptage 1821 – 1887. Husband of Susannah (Stroud)
Edward Lindsay Emptage 1831 – 1872. Husband of Sarah Ann (Marsh)
George and Edward sons of Humphrey Emptage and Isabel (Brett).
