Below is the list of the people mentioned in the 95 Emptage wills, probate documents, inventories or accounts with which we are currently working. Included are the names of Emptages who received bequests from non Emptages. As you can see, not only did the spelling of the surname vary until standardised spelling became the norm but occasionally two spellings were used in the same will.

From the point of illuminating our ancestors lives, the wills are interesting documents in themselves but, from the point of trying to establish family groupings, they can be exceedingly frustrating. The testator making bequests to their wife and children without naming them doesn’t help us!
